ASPECTS OF A THEOLOGY OF RELIGION

The aspect of mission as an individual, often spontaneous occasion—limited in every instance to the event in question—is also significant for that which one may label as Zinzendorf’s theology of religion. This becomes evident from the following short section from a speech Zinzendorf held in Zeist in the Netherlands in 1746:

What should people think about our “heathen work”? I do see our work in those lands where—as no sane person would dispute—the common people truly believe in false gods as “heathen work.” . . . We act like courtiers when they approach the rooms of a great lord and do not dare to knock; they only scratch [at the door], so that those who are close to the door can pay attention and open it if they wish, but if they do not wish, they can ignore it and pay no attention: We do not knock, we only tap when get the impression that the Holy Spirit has souls in attendance who are silently listening. For our commission does not state that we should convert nations, lands, and islands, no, our instructions say nothing about that; rather, just as we ourselves are an eklogé [selection], so we too may only hope for an aparché [gift of firstfruits] from among the heathen here and there, and particularly from among the unspoiled heathen who have had as little contact with the so-called “Christindians” [Christianer] as possible, and of whom by grace we have seen more than one with our own eyes.13
